Marco Abarca, born in 1962 in Veracruz, is a sculptor trained in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Veracruz University in Xalapa. Actively creating, exhibiting, and teaching for more than a decade, with more and more of his time spent in Oaxaca; he and his family decided to make their permanent home there in 1998. Marco’s most recent innovative work is the creation of boxed scenes. These compositions carry a patina of age as well as showing the hand of a fine sculptor of sensitivity and humor. Some of the boxes are open scenes and others, with closing doors, remind one of ancient triptychs. Recently he turned his hand to nacimientos - nativity scenes. Art of Oaxaca has commissioned three nacimientos that will be shown for the first time in Chapel Hill in September, 2000, at the time of La Fiesta del Pueblo.
