RODOLFO MORALES
Rodolfo Morales is the 'maestro' of our collection. He passed away on Feb. 5, 2001. Click here for his obituary from the New York Times.

He was born in 1925 in Ocotlan de Morelos, Oaxaca.  His resume is six pages long, from his studies that began in 1948 through his one man exhibtions and honors from all over the world.

He is featured in Pisando en el Cielo, Pintores de Oaxaca, a supurb documentary film about Oaxacan art and artists we hope to show you with an accompanying translation.

Morales' work is known for exaggerated hands and feet, little dogs, and the dreamy floating of his figures. He is the founder of the Rodolfo Morales Cultural Foundation. He makes a collage at the beginning each day to provide support for the work of the Foundation, through which he guides the restoration of village churches and convents and contributes to ecological and humanitarian relief projects. We have several of these collages in our collection.

From ARTTHOUGHTS by Gresham Riley in the May 2001 issue of ArtMatters: The Philadelphia Region's Magazine of the Arts & Antiques.

In fact, Oaxaca has a legitimate claim to the title of "artistic capital of Mexico," because it has been home for three of the country’s four most important artists ---- Rufino Tamayo, Rodolfo Morales, and Francisco Toledo. Only Diego Rivera did not have a significant Oaxaca connection.

Until Morales died on January 30th of this year at the age of 76, he and Toledo had reigned for a decade as Mexico’s greatest living artists. Both in death and in life Rodolfo Morales was very much an artist of the country’s indigenous peoples, especially its women. His death was the occasion for a period of national mourning that was still in evidence when we arrived two weeks later. In his large body of paintings Morales employed a surrealistic style, enriched by a fertile imagination, to depict folkloric themes and dreamlike images in rich colors. Women dominated his canvases because, as he once explained, Mexico would be lost without the steadfast work of women. They bear the burden of day-to-day living and find solutions to those problems to which men simply resign themselves.
