The Morales family is prospering. When Jennifer was a baby, their home had a dirt
floor and just two rooms separated by a partial cinderblock wall, with no electricity
or running water. Their new home has four rooms, electricity and running water,
and is built on a concrete slab.

Other families in the village of Arrazola are prospering as well, because of the
popularity of the carved and painted figures. There are about 20 families who
have taken up this handicraft. Few display the artistry of the Morales couple
-- but many are successful and make attractive figures, picture frames, and
novelty items.
In Arrazola, families work together, and so do whole villages. The newly paved
streets, refurbished church, and several new town buildings -- a school, a market,
a government building, and a health clinic -- all have been built in the last seven
or eight years. Arrazola is a modern example of cooperative community activity.
There are numerous other examples of family and community cooperative projects
in the valley of Oaxaca.
